Scroll Wheel Test

Spin your mouse wheel as fast as you can. The timer starts on your first scroll and runs for 5 seconds. When it stops you get two numbers: the total scrolls you logged and your scrolls per second.

This is both a speed check and a fault check. A healthy notched wheel gives one clean step per notch, in the direction you turn it. If your count jumps around, drops steps, or fires the wrong way, the test will show it.

50-75 scrollsAverageA solid spin on a normal notched wheel, roughly 10 to 15 notches per second. This is a typical hard-scroll result.
75-110 scrollsFastYou are flicking the wheel hard and it is tracking every step. Good sign that the encoder is clean and healthy.

How a mouse wheel actually works

Most mice use a notched wheel. Inside the wheel is a rotary encoder: a small toothed disc that opens and closes a contact as it turns. Each notch you feel is one step, and the mouse sends one scroll event per step. That is what this test counts. The bumps you feel come from a spring and a star-shaped wheel, so every notch is a discrete click both in your fingers and in the signal the computer receives.

What faults this test finds

People usually come here because something feels wrong. Watch the count as you scroll slowly, one notch at a time. If a single notch adds two or three to the total, that is double-stepping, the classic sign of a dirty or worn encoder. If some notches add nothing, the wheel is skipping. If the number goes down when you scroll up, the direction is inverted, which is often a setting rather than hardware. Stutter, where smooth spinning gives jerky jumps, points the same way: a tired encoder that needs cleaning or replacing.

Notched, free-spin, and high-resolution wheels

Not all wheels are the same, and the count depends on which you have. A classic notched wheel gives one event per click. A free-spin wheel can disengage the notches and coast, firing a burst of events from one flick. A high-resolution wheel sends many small steps per physical notch for smoother scrolling. Trackpads report even more, since they track continuous finger movement. So a huge number here does not mean your hand is faster, it means your device reports more events. This is really a mouse-wheel test, and it reads best on a plain notched wheel.

Where scroll speed matters

Fast, reliable scrolling is not just for show. In games, many players bind weapon or slot switching to the wheel, so a skipping wheel means you grab the wrong gun. Some shooters even bind jump or fire to scroll. Outside games, a wheel that tracks cleanly makes long documents, code, and spreadsheets far less painful. In all of these, consistency matters more than raw speed: every notch should count once, exactly when you turn it.

How to read your result honestly

The bands here are our own rating for this specific test, not an official standard. They are calibrated to a notched wheel spun hard, very roughly 10 to 25 notches per second. Your number depends on your wheel type, your mouse driver, and your browser, since browsers can batch or scale scroll events differently. Run it a few times and compare. A stable, repeatable count matters more than any single high score, and a wildly jumpy count is itself a useful diagnostic.

Why is my scroll count so high?

You probably have a high-resolution wheel, a free-spin wheel that coasts, or you are using a trackpad. All of these send many more events per physical movement than a classic notched wheel. The test counts scroll events, so a smoother device reports more of them.

My wheel adds two scrolls per notch. What is wrong?

That is double-stepping, and it is the most common wheel fault. It usually means the rotary encoder inside the wheel is dirty or worn. Cleaning it can help, but a worn encoder often needs replacing. This test is a quick way to confirm the problem before you open the mouse.
