Boulder Buggy is an off-road physics driving game. You balance a chunky buggy over endless desert hills, and the whole game is throttle control: too little gas and you stall on a climb, too much and the nose lifts until you loop over onto your roof. Keep both wheels planted through the dips, feather the gas over the crests, and see how far you can drive before you flip. The hills get taller and steeper the farther you go.
It is a self-built game made by PlayClick, our own take on the physics driver. It is not affiliated with any other car or driving game, and it uses our own vehicle and code. It runs right in your browser with no sign-up and no download, so it plays the same on a school Chromebook as it does at home.
How to play
The buggy rolls on its own once you touch the gas. Press gas to drive right and up the hills, brake to slow down or back up. Distance is the score, so the goal is simply to get as far as you can.
The catch is the balance. Gas does not just move you, it lifts the front of the buggy, because the power goes to the back wheels. A little lift helps you climb and clear crests. Too much and the buggy keeps rotating until it lands on its roof, which ends the run.
When both wheels leave the ground off a big crest, you are in the air and can rotate. Hold gas to spin the nose back, brake to tip it forward, and try to land with both wheels down. Land on your roof or nose-first into a hill and the run is over.
Controls
On a keyboard, press the Right arrow or D for gas, and the Left arrow or A to brake and reverse. That is the whole scheme.
On the ground, gas drives you forward and lifts the nose, brake slows you and can back you up out of a stuck spot. In the air, gas rotates the buggy backward and brake rotates it forward, so you set up a level landing.
On a phone or tablet, use the GAS button on the right and the BRAKE button on the left. There is nothing to install and no keyboard needed.
How to not flip
Feather the gas, do not hold it flat out. On a steep climb, short taps keep the front end down and the power on the ground. Flooring it just lifts the nose and loops you backward.
Going downhill, ease off or tap the brake so you do not launch off the bottom of the dip with too much speed. A controlled descent sets up the next climb.
Over a sharp crest, let off the gas as the front lifts, then feed it back in once the front comes down on the far side. In the air, watch which way you are spinning and use gas or brake to bring the wheels back under you before you land.
Scoring and your best run
Your score is the distance you drive in meters, and your farthest run is saved on your device so you can chase it. Air time and clean flips off the big crests add bonus points, so a stylish run scores more than a flat crawl over the same ground.
The hills get taller and steeper the farther you go, so a long run turns into a real balancing test as the terrain gets rougher. Late crests launch you higher and demand cleaner landings.
Your best distance sits at the top of the screen the whole time, waiting to be beaten.
