Rally Rivals is a 2-player off-road racing game. Two buggies race down the exact same hills, side by side on one screen, and the whole game is throttle control: feather the gas so your nose lifts to climb but never loops you over onto your roof. First buggy to the finish flag wins, and if you leave your rival off the back of the screen, that wins too. Grab a friend for one keyboard, or race the computer solo.
It is a self-built game made by PlayClick, our own head-to-head take on the physics driver, and the two-player sibling of our single-player Boulder Buggy. It is not affiliated with any other car or racing game, and it uses our own vehicles and code. It runs right in your browser with no sign-up and no download, so it plays the same on a school Chromebook as it does at home.
How to play
Both buggies start on the same hills after a short countdown. Press gas to drive right and climb, brake to slow down or back up. The first buggy to reach the finish flag wins the race.
The catch is the same balance as our single-player driver: gas lifts the nose because the power goes to the back wheels. A little lift helps you climb, too much loops you over. Flip in a race and you are not out, you spin out and recover after a moment while your rival drives on, so one mistake does not end the race but it does cost you ground.
There is a second way to win. The camera follows whoever is in front, so if you build a big enough lead your rival slides off the back of the screen. Leave them behind long enough and you win on the spot.
Controls
Two players share one keyboard. Player 1 uses D or W for gas and A or S to brake. Player 2 uses the Right or Up arrow for gas and Left or Down to brake. On the ground gas drives you and lifts the nose, brake slows and reverses. In the air, gas rotates the buggy back and brake tips it forward so you can land level.
Prefer to play alone? Pick 1 Player and race the computer at Easy, Medium, or Hard. The computer drives the same buggy on the same hills, so it is a fair race, not a rigged one.
On a phone or tablet, on-screen gas and brake pads appear at the bottom corners, one set per player. Two thumbs on one phone is tight, so solo versus the computer is the easier touch game. One note for two on a laptop: some cheaper keyboards drop keys when several are held at once, so touch or a solo race is the backup.
How to win the race
Feather, do not floor it. Flooring the gas on a climb just lifts the nose and spins you out, and every spin-out is time your rival gains. Short taps keep the power on the ground and the buggy moving forward.
Carry your speed through the dips. Ease off at the bottom of a valley so you do not launch off the far side out of control, then feed the gas back in on the climb. Smooth beats fast-and-flipping over a full race.
Use the lead. If you get in front, drive clean and steady, because the further ahead you get the closer your rival is to sliding off the screen for an instant win. If you are behind, you get a small slipstream boost to help you claw back, so a race is rarely over until the flag.
One player or two
Two-player mode is the main event: both of you on one keyboard, first to the flag, best of however many you feel like. The series score at the top counts your wins across the session, so you can play a long rivalry.
One-player mode races you against the computer. Easy over-guns the climbs and spins out often, so it is a gentle warm-up. Hard feathers cleanly and rarely flips, so you will need smooth throttle control to beat it. The computer is bound by the same physics you are, so a win is a real win.
Switch modes or difficulty from the buttons above the track, and hit rematch after a race to run it back on fresh hills.
Questions and answers
What is Rally Rivals?
It is a free 2-player physics car game where two buggies race the same off-road hills on one screen. First to the finish flag wins, or leave your rival off the back of the screen. You can race a friend on one keyboard or the computer solo. It is PlayClick's own game, the two-player sibling of Boulder Buggy, not affiliated with any other racing game.
How do two players share one keyboard?
Player 1 uses D or W for gas and A or S to brake. Player 2 uses the Right or Up arrow for gas and Left or Down to brake. You sit side by side on one laptop. On some cheaper keyboards a few simultaneous keys can drop, so touch controls or a solo race against the computer are a backup.
Can I play one player against the computer?
Yes. Pick 1 Player and race the computer at Easy, Medium, or Hard. It drives the same buggy on the same hills under the same physics, so it is a fair race. Solo is also the easier game to play on a phone.
What happens if I flip over?
In a race a flip is not the end. Your buggy spins out and recovers upright after about a second while your rival keeps driving, so one mistake costs you ground but does not lose you the race. Feather the gas to flip less and you will win more.
Is it free and does it work unblocked at school?
Yes. The game is free, needs no sign-up, and runs fully in your browser, so it plays the same on a school or work network as anywhere else. There is nothing to download or install. We are not a proxy, so if your network blocks this exact site we cannot get around that.
