This is a semantic word game. There are no letter tiles and no green or yellow squares. You guess a word, and the game tells you how close that word is in meaning to the secret word of the day. Rank 1 is the secret word itself, rank 2 is the closest word to it, and the number climbs the further your guess drifts in meaning.
It is a self-built game made by PlayClick, our own take on the guess by meaning format. It is not Contexto and it is not affiliated with Contexto or any other brand. Same idea of chasing a secret word by closeness, our own word list, our own daily pick, all ranked in your browser with nothing sent anywhere. One secret goes live each day and resets at midnight UTC.
How to play
- Type any common word and submit it. There are no letters to match.
- Each guess gets a rank: how close it is in meaning to the secret word.
- Rank 1 is the secret word. A low rank like 8 or 40 means you are very close.
- A high rank in the thousands means the guess is far off in meaning.
- Use the closest guesses to steer toward the idea the secret word belongs to.
- There is no guess limit. The goal is to reach rank 1 in as few tries as you can.
How the semantic game works
The game ranks words by meaning. Behind the scenes every word in our list has a position in a map of meaning, learned from how words are used together in real text. When you guess a word, we measure how near it sits to the secret word on that map and turn the distance into a rank. Rank 1 is the secret word, rank 2 is its nearest neighbour in meaning, and so on down a list of thousands.
So a guess of DOG when the secret is CAT will score a very low rank, because the two words live close together in meaning. A guess of TABLE will score a far higher rank. You are not hunting letters, you are hunting the idea. The whole ranking runs in your browser from a word map we ship with the page, so your guesses never leave your device.
Because there is no letter feedback, the game rewards thinking about topics and categories rather than spelling. A single warm guess can open up a whole neighbourhood of related words to try next.
Strategy for guessing by meaning
Start wide. Throw out a few unrelated everyday words from different corners of life, like OCEAN, MONEY, MUSIC, and ANIMAL. Their ranks tell you which broad area the secret word lives in. Whichever scores lowest is your thread to pull.
Once a guess lands warm, zoom in. If ANIMAL comes back at a low rank, try DOG, HORSE, BIRD, and FISH, then follow whichever is warmest into its own neighbours. Each warmer guess narrows the space, the same way twenty questions narrows down an object. Watch for the rank dropping fast, that means you are heading the right way.
Do not fixate on one word. If a promising line stops getting warmer, jump to a nearby idea. Synonyms, opposites, and words from the same scene all tend to rank close, so a secret about cold might sit near SNOW, WINTER, ICE, and FROST all at once.
Looking for a Contexto alternative
If you came here after playing Contexto and wanted another word by meaning puzzle, this is one. We built our own version with the same core idea, guess the secret word by semantic closeness, so it will feel familiar from the first guess. What is different is the word list, the ranking data, and the code, which are ours, and the honest fact that we are not Contexto and not tied to it.
Because it is our own build, the whole thing runs in your browser with no sign-up and no download, and no guess is uploaded anywhere. You get a fresh secret word every day, a hint ladder for when you are stuck, a companion page with today's answer behind a spoiler, and a full archive of past days. It is meant to be the semantic word game you play when you want the challenge without the brand attached.
One secret word a day
There is one secret word for everyone, and it changes at midnight UTC. The whole world is chasing the same word on the same day, so you can compare how many guesses it took without spoiling the answer.
The one a day limit keeps it honest. You get one real hunt at the secret, you find it, and you come back tomorrow. If you miss a day there is no backlog to clear. A new secret is always waiting, and the answer and archive pages are there if you want to check a day you skipped.
Questions and answers
What is a semantic word game?
It is a word game where you guess a secret word by meaning rather than by letters. Each guess is ranked by how close it is in meaning to the secret word, so you close in on the answer by topic and association instead of spelling.
Is this Contexto?
No. This is PlayClick's own semantic word game, built by us with our own word list and our own code. It is not Contexto and it is not affiliated with Contexto or any other brand. It uses the same idea of guessing a secret word by closeness in meaning.
What does the rank number mean?
The rank is how close your guess is in meaning to the secret word. Rank 1 is the secret word itself. A low rank such as 5 or 50 means you are very close. A rank in the thousands means the guess is far off in meaning.
How many guesses do I get?
There is no limit. You can guess as many words as you need. The challenge is reaching rank 1, the secret word, in as few guesses as possible.
Why was my word not accepted?
The game only ranks words in its own word list of common words. If a guess is rejected, it is not in that list. Try a more common everyday word instead.
Does everyone get the same secret word?
Yes. There is one shared secret word per day for every player, reset at midnight UTC. That way you can compare how many guesses it took without spoiling the answer for anyone.
Is my data private?
Yes. The whole ranking runs in your browser from a word map shipped with the page. Your guesses are never sent to a server. There is no sign-up and no download.
